Godfroid Okoko has resigned as head coach of Azam Rwanda Premier League bottom side Gicumbi FC and is reported to be on his way to replace Jimmy Ndayizeye, who was sacked by fellow strugglers Espoir last week.
"I have been here for the last two-years. I know I still had more work to do but I have decided to resign due to poor performance of the team and other reasons. I have to look for another opportunity elsewhere,” Okoko revealed after Gicumbi’s 0-4 home defeat against APR FC on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the Burundian tactician, known for helping struggling clubs to avoid relegation, is already in Rusizi for talks with Espoir leadership.
Espoir are currently in 13th place with 14 points, just two points ahead of Miroplast FC, who occupy the last two relegation spots after 15 rounds of matches.
He noted that; "I am quitting Gicumbi because of personal reasons. I have taken the decision and I have told my bosses, they know why I am quitting the club. I thank the players for working so hard during my time here.”
Okoko is another coach leaving Gicumbi FC without completing his contract duration in 2016, Emmanuel Ruremesha resigned citing "poor relationship with the club management.”
Now, according Gicumbi secretary general, Antoine ‘Birabakoraho’ Dukuzumuremyi, assistant coach Methode Kamali will be in charge of the team until the club appoints a new head coach.
Dukuzumuremyi said; "Okoko has informed us that he is leaving and we have to respect his decision. We will look for his replacement but in the meantime the assistant coach will be in charge of the team.”
Under Okoko, Gicumbi have won just three and drawn two matches in 15 league outings, and they are the league’s lowest scoring team with just seven goals. They have also conceded the most, 25.
Last season, Okoko managed to keep Gicumbi in the topflight division on the very last day.
Okoko has previously coached SC Kiyovu, AS Muhanga, Mukura Vs, La Jeunesse, Amagaju, Musanze and former top division Kibuye FC in 2008.
