The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has decided to disqualify Rwandan league champions Gisagara Volleyball Club from this year’s continental Men’s African Club Championships, which got underway yesterday and will run until April 5 in Cairo, Egypt.

Gisagara have been in residential training camp at Centre Christus Motel in Remera for the last one week preparing the competition in which they were going to make a first appearance.

Head coach Fidele Nyirimana was already in Cairo where he arrived on Sunday as part of an advance party and even attended the technical meeting on Monday.

The Confederation, in a letter dated March 25, 2018 and addressed to Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB), said: "Your team Gisagara missed the deadline to submitting the required registration documents even at the time the final list of 24 teams was made.”

"We regret the predicament the team is in,” adds part of the letter signed by Howyda Mondy, CAVB Executive Director.

The deadline to confirm participation in the competition elapsed on March 20 and CAVB says it communicated to the 24 teams that had met all the required conditions, the next day.

Gisagara had already made air ticket booking for 14 players and five officials, in addition to having paid US$1000 registration fee.

Efforts to get a comment from Gisagara management were futile by press time, as none of the team’s officials was accessible on phone.
