MTN, RwandaOnline have unveiled a new drive that is aimed at increasing use of digital payment services by the public.

The 90-day campaign dubbed "Byikorere ku Irembo, Birangize na MoMo” seeks to encourage Rwandans to pay for services electronically, according to Bart Hofker, the MTN chief executive officer. Hofker added that the campaign supports government’s efforts geared at "delivering an inclusive digital economy”.

Clement Uwajeneza, the Irembo managing director, said the partnership with MTN is a critical to Rwanda’s goal of becoming a cashless and service-based economy. The partnership means that MTN Mobile Money users will be able to pay for Irembo services on their mobile telephones.

The campaign comes on the heels of a new e-payment service, Mobile Money (MoMo) Pay, launched by the telecom firm last week to facilitate business transactions through subscribers’ mobile wallets.
