RNP and the City of Kigali have since Monday provided alternative routes for motorists to facilitate smooth flow of dignitaries including heads of state and government arriving for the 10th Extraordinary Summit of the African Union.
The diversions, Police said, are meant to ease movement of VIPs.
"As usual, we have received positive response from motorists especially those that use the road from Kigali International Airport-Remera-KCC-city centre, which is the most affected traffic route,” Senior Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the spokesperson for traffic and road safety department, said.
The provided alternative routes include Nyabugogo-Yamaha-Kinamba-
"These roads were inspected and are some of the constructed and upgraded roads that provide best alternative routes in times when the main road from the airport is temporarily closed for VIPs,” SSP Ndushabandi said.
He, however, clarified that the same main road is only closed to motorists when in use by arriving or departing dignitaries.
"We have increased presence of police officers along all the roads to facilitate motorists but overall, we appreciate the response and attitude so far exhibited by road users in general. It is in the culture and values of Rwandans to accord respect and welcome guests the best we can; we urge them to continue to be defined by the same spirit of patience,” he said.
"We will also continue updating you from time to time through various communication channels like social media and radio on roads that can be accessible and when they are temporarily closed, to avoid thick traffic jam.”
Kigali has successfully hosted similar high profile continental and international meetings in the past including the AU summit in 2016, Transform Africa and Interpol General Assembly in 2015.
