Two suspected robbers were yesterday arrested in Kabarondo, Kayonza District, following a night attack on a resident who was returning home.

Chief Inspector of Police Theobald Kanamugire, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspects, aged 38, and 22; armed with knives, ambushed one Aphrodice Ntawiheba Rusera Cell in Umucyo Village, as he headed home and robbed him of Rwf500,000.

The victim had gone to pay a visit to his mother in Kabarondo.

"He had a drink in one of the bars in Kabarondo trading centre in the same bar that the suspects were also having drinks from. As Ntawiheba was returning home at around 9pm, the two allegedly attacked and stabbed him with knives before robbing him,” said CIP Kanamugire.

"Good enough, the victim was able to identify the attackers. His description of the suspects was also corroborated by other people, who were passing by and witnessed the attack,” he added.

The victim sustained cuts on the head.

An ambush, under article 139 of the penal code, consists of waiting, for a certain period of time in one or various places, for an individual, either to kill or commit violence against the ambushed person.

Article 148, partly, states that "if the offender acted with premeditation or ambush, he or she shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of two to three years and a fine of Rwf100,000 to Rwf500,0000.

However, theft with violence or threat under article 301 of the penal code attracts a term of imprisonment of between three and five years and a fine of five to ten times the value of the stolen asset.
