Dear Editor,

I learnt from your paper that the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has approved the amendment of the East African Community (EAC) Customs Management Bill.

The amendment if passed will extend the application of the preferential tariff treatment under the Common Market for East, Southern Africa (COMESA) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) from the 31 December this year to 31 December, 2010.

Though we are in the East African Community, it has been very expensive to import goods from Tanzania, as they (goods) attract high taxes because Tanzania belongs to (SADC).

This move will also enable Partner States to continue trading within themselves. On behalf of other traders in the community, I would like to thank EALA and hope that the EAC continues to solve all the other trade barriers in the region.
