Mount Kenya University Rwanda (MKUR) Hospitality and Tourism Management training department got a boost on 19th January, 2018 when they received books worth 30,000 Us dollars from the Chairman, Board of Directors, of the University Council, Prof. Simon Gicharu.

Mount Kenya University Rwanda (MKUR) Hospitality and Tourism Management training department got a boost on 19th January, 2018 when they received books worth 30,000 Us dollars from the Chairman, Board of Directors, of the University Council, Prof. Simon Gicharu.

The books were presented to the Vice Chancellor Designate, Prof Evans Kerosi by Dr.  Vincent Gaitho , the Vice Chairman of the Council, on behalf of the Chairman.

Gaitho was in the country for a four days visit to assess the progress of the University development projects since its relocation to its Ultra Modern Campus in Kagarama, Kicukiro District last year.

The presentation which took place at the University’s Peter Claver Nyombayire Library was attended by among others the Representative, Board of Directors, Rwanda, Antony Kamau, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academics, John Nyirigira, the Director of the Institute of Security Studies, Justice and Ethics, Joyce Muchemi,  the University Librarian, Aline Hoza, the head of Hospitality and Tourism training, Benson Abuto and Students.

It’s all smiles as Dr. Gaitho, Kamau, Prof Kerosi (2nd, 3rd and 5th from left) glance through the books donated by the Chairman of the University Council with members of staff and students.

 Visitors who have visited the library have hailed it as an ambitious project and consider it to be the best in the country in terms of service delivery and facilities. The library is ushering in a new era of academic excellence for students, staff and the public.

Speaking to the press during the function, Gaitho noted that the University is moving in the right direction to achieve its goals of becoming a Centre of Excellence in niche areas relevant for the growth of Rwanda.  ‘Our commitment to investment is to achieve Excellence in teaching, learning and Research and developing leaders in many disciplines, who make a difference in society locally and globally. We have also realized   that the Hospitality and Tourism sector has a great potential for the development of this country, and we are now focusing on playing part in growing the industry by setting up a Centre of Excellence to produce qualified staff that are hands on and job creators”, he said.  

Gaitho applauded the Member of Parliament, Honorable Mukandutiye Speciose’s acceptance to vacate her land in the interest of the University to develop Education in the country.  Since then the University has embarked on constructing a modern Hospitality Centre and acquiring a variety of Equipment to enhance learning in field.

He thanked the government for giving the University an enabling environment to operate and reiterated its commitment to offer quality training and forging more training partnerships with government agencies as witnessed with the Rwanda National Police during his visit.

The University has also acquired more land for the construction of a Student’s Hostel, Journalism Studio Basket ball pitch, Study Villas, and a Swimming Pool for an estimated cost of over 2.5million Us dollars. It is also improving its access roads to ensure easy mobility for pedestrians, motorbikes and motorists to reach the campus.

 While on a visit to the University in December, 2017, Gicharu said the improvement of the access roads will go along way in ensuring students and the community enjoy safe movement as well as stimulate trade and business activities in the district that will enhance employment and uplift the standard of living.
