All is set for the 18th edition of the MTN Golf Open tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Kigali Golf Club in Nyarutarama.

The organisers say that this year’s tournament has been specifically held in January as part of activities to celebrate 20 years since MTN started operations in Rwanda.

Dr Davis Kashaka is the defending champion in the men’s category, while Alice Rwigema is for the women’s category. The tournament, which is normally held in October, wasn’t held last year due to a tight schedule for the main sponsors.

"This year’s edition is special because MTN will be celebrating 20 years since we started working in Rwanda,” said Alain Numa, the head of Promotion, Sponsorship and events at MTN.

According to Dr. Kashaka, who is also the Kigali Golf Club captain, they expect over 90 golfers in different categories.

"So far 90 golfers have registered and we expect the number to increase before tee off on Saturday morning,” Kashaka told a news conference held at the Kigali Golf Club on Thursday morning.

The winners of the different categories will walk away with prizes including Samsung smart phones, air tickets on top of trophies. The different categories will include; handicapped 0-9, 10-18, 19-28 for both men and women.

The tournament’s other sponsors include Brussels Airline, Victoria Motors Rwanda LTD and Satguru Travels Kigali.
