WHEN A STONE IS UNCOVERED, THE HOE IS SPARED

There is a saying that when a farmer sees the stone or rock in time, his tool, the hoe, is spared from destruction. This is because the farmer will remove the stone without damaging his hoe in his attempt to till the land. This saying applies well with other areas such as the fight against HIV/Aids and even corruption. Mentioning corruption, one should laud the attitude of our leaders during the recent 6th National Dialogue held at the Parliamentary Buildings. Without beating about the bush, they admitted that corrupt tendencies do exist. This, even with the fact that Rwanda is renowned for her zero tolerance against the vice. The institutions charged with fighting malpractices, corruption included, admitted that even in their midst some have been caught on the wrong side of the law.

Admitting a malady is a good start. This gives a chance to the healing process. These institutions not only admitted to detecting these tendencies but also mentioned carrying out stern measures against culprits.

President Paul Kagame called for even sterner measures. Many a Rwandan definitely agrees with him on this. However, we should not just acknowledge the fact that the problem exists but also play an active role in stamping it out.

They say corruption is a cancer that if unchecked it can rot the whole society. The good news is that once detected early, a cancer can be cured and better still, it can even be prevented.  Let’s fight the horrible disease called corruption, let’s speak out and act against it.
