The event organized by Thousand Kilo’s Women Canoe Kayak and Aquatic Sports Club, in partnership with the Rwanda Swimming Federation, will see competitors racing a distance of one kilometer across Lake Muhazi.

Rwanda Swimming Federation president, Samuel Ufitimana said the competition will also be used as an opportunity to sensitize the masses, who live the around the lake, to be vigilant while swimming.

"Deaths have been reported since some residents drown because they don’t have the skills to swim, as the competition takes place, it will be an opportunity to educate residents about swimming safety,” he told Saturday Sport.

Ufitimana added that, "We also want to use the event itself to encourage residents around the lake to take up swimming as a sport.”
