Rwanda national cycling team (Team Rwanda) will enter residential training camp at the Africa Cycling Rising Center in Musanze district on Monday ahead of the 2018 African Continental Road Championships that will be held in Kigali from February 13-18.

According to the Permanent Secretary in Rwanda Cycling Federation Rwanda (FERWACY), Emmanuel Murenzi, preparations for the continental event are already underway.

The provisional team, which will be led by head coach Sterling Magnell, will start intensive preparations on Monday but the final team will be named two weeks before the race.

Murenzi said, "We are delighted and honored to host the continental championships again. We are working on preparing our riders in the best way possible and also looking forward to having a very successful event.”

Events for the continental championships in Kigali will include; time trials for both individuals and teams but the main attraction will be the road races for both men and women.

It will be the second time that Rwanda hosts the continental championships, but the first in eight years since 2010.

Rwanda already has experience in hosting high-level competitions such as Tour du Rwanda which has earned great success over the years and is now one of the major cycling events in Africa.

The Junior Women’s Team Time Trial will compete for a distance of 18.6 km same as the Men’s Junior Team Time Trial.

In the Elite Women’s Team Time Trial will run 40.0km as will the Elites Men’s Team Time Trial—the time trial and will be held from Kicukiro to Nyamata in Bugesera district.

Meanwhile, the Women Junior Road will cover a distance of 60km and their male counterparts will do 72km. Elite Women will compete for 84km while the Elite Men will don 168km, which will be held in Kigali City.
