We must all embrace the fight against drug abuse

I am a teen and sometimes at school I see students get initiated into drug abuse; this must be stopped at all cost. But it requires every individual’s effort to be able to defeat drugs and protect our country’s future.

Editor,

RE: "Govt scales up fight against drug abuse” (The New Times, Dec 28). I thank government officials to have organised the outreach in Northern Province where smuggling and abuse of drugs are frequent. According to the cabinet ministers present and the IGP, residents need to improve cooperation with the authorities through community policing to combat illegal drugs in our community, because drugs continue to destroy many young people – including my friends.

True, we must all embrace the fight against drug abuse. Some people think that they are not concerned with the fight against drug abuse arguing that their loved ones do not use or smuggle them. However, even though their own relatives do not do that, the consequences of drug abuse will undoubtedly affect them.

For instance, drug abuse may be a cause for robbery, rape, or any other crime that impinge on the well-being of society; and I believe all these crimes emerging from drug smuggling and abuse affect everyone, hence the need for everyone to team up with others to scale up efforts to fight against drug abuse and smuggling.
