A meeting bringing together foreign affairs ministers from the Central African region is underway in Kigali.

The meeting attracted participants from the member states of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa (UNSAC) who are deliberating on major security issues facing the sub-region, according to organisers.

The 45th UNSAC ministerial meeting was preceded by sessions involving security experts from the grouping, which kicked off on December 4.

Delegates will review the geopolitical situation in Central Africa and reports pertaining to disarmament, terrorism and armed conflicts, piracy and maritime security, according to a statement released to the media.

The grouping brings together 11 member countries from the sub-region, namely; Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda, and Sao Tome and Principe.

At the meeting, Rwanda is expected to assume the chairmanship of the Committee and will serve for six months.

Representatives of regional and international organisations such as African Union, Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Regional Centre on Small Arms, and the Economic Community of Western African States are attending as observers.

Since 2011, UNSAC’s secretariat has been the responsibility of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) based in Libreville, Gabon.

At the meeting, Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo took over as chair of the committee from her Cameroonian counterpart.
