Expand medical workers housing project

Editor, RE: “Ministry of Health to provide housing for medical workers” (The New Times, October 23). This is an opportunity for affordable housing real estate investors. 1300 doctors is a good business case for developers, especially with the really good incentives from Rwanda Development Board for affordable housing. Of course, there may be some pertinent considerations in this case, e.g what happens if a doctor moves to another hospital?

This is where our medical doctors professional association can come in for a round-table discussion with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Rwanda Housing Authority, hospitals representatives and banking associations.

Maybe the scope can even be widened to include doctors practising in private hospitals. The success of such a project can trickle down to other marginalised professions like nurses and teachers, who usually find bank mortgage terms and conditions too high for their salary bracket.

Providing accommodation to medical professionals in remote areas of the country will encourage our medics to work in such areas and provide services to the local population. It has been lacking but it’s not yet too late.
