Bugesera FC head coach Ali Bizimungu has saluted his players after stunning defending champions Rayon Sports 1-0 in the AZAM Rwanda Premier League at Nyamata turf in Bugesera on Saturday.

Forward Dusenge Bertin scored a lone second half goal to give Bugesera the first win of the season.

"The key to today’s success was the game plan. The boys were committed and delivered. They played like men. Now we can focus on other matches and look to strategize how we can get more points,” said Bizimungu.

Following a goalless first half, the hosts who dominated the game earned a deserved victory when Dusenge unleashed a long shot which bounced off defender Eric Rutanga en-route to the back of net.

Despite several attempts from Rayon Sports, Bugesera FC held on to defend their goal, and eventually secured their first victory of the season.

However, Bizimungu and Rayon coach Olivier Karekezi nearly exchanged blows as the latter alongside his players blamed Bugesera FC for time wasting after their Nigerian import Samson Ikechukwu allegedly feigned an injury in the dying minutes of the game.

The two coaches were both sent off the touchline, leaving their assistants to handle the remaining minutes of the game.

The win for Bugesera FC who are 14th with three points ended Rayon Sport’s unbeaten start to the season, leaving Karekezi’s men three points behind leaders and arch rivals APR in fifth place.

Elsewhere, on Saturday, Etincelles were forced to a 1-all draw at home by visitors Mukura VS at Umuganda Stadium.

Kirehe also secured their first win of the season after edging Musanze FC 1-0 at home following a lone strike from Jean Paul Uwimbabazi. Sunrise FC earned a point from their away game against Espoir FC in Rusizi.

However, APR maintained their good start to the League as they thumped AS Kigali 2-1 on the third day of the season’s encounter played on Friday afternoon at Kigali Stadium.

Goals from Maxime Sekamana and Martin Fabrice Twizeyimana handed the military side a deserved win over the Kigali City sponsored side. The AS Kigali lone goal was scored by Rodrigue with a good header.

The win took APR to the top of the log with seven points in three matches played so far, while AS Kigali are jointly ranked fourth with Etincelles on four points.
