Celebrated Rwandan artist Cécile Kayirebwa will join legendary producer Maurix Baru, widely known as Maurix Music, for the ‘Afro Opera Dinner Gala’ on February 17, at Atelier du Vin in Kigali.

The Valentine's Day aftermath event which is dedicated to lovers aims to provide a romantic setting for couples to celebrate the occasion over the weekend, offering a unique experience.

Maurix Baru, real name Maurice Umwami, is renowned for establishing one of Rwanda’s earliest modern music studios, producing hits for iconic Pop and R&B musicians like ‘Mbwira Yego’ by Tom Close, ‘Amahirwe ya Nyuma’ by The Ben, ‘Ndagukunda’ by Miss Shanel, ‘Sindi Indyarya’ by Urban Boyz. Additionally, ‘Nakoze Iki?’ by Riderman, Chorale de Kigali,Uganda's Messach Ssemakula and many others.

Baru is now venturing into music and his main focus is in Afro-Opera and R&B-Soul a genre that is new in Rwanda and produced for international consumption. The singer aims to become the first Rwandan musician to perform opera in Kinyarwanda.

The singer blends Kinyarwanda, French and English and his songs such as ‘Donne-moi ta main’ and ‘Igitenge’ are the latest tracks he has released from his EP.

According to Temari Kabatesi, the event organizer, featuring the ‘Ubumanzi’ singer is acknowledging her contributions. However, Kayirebwa, in return, expressed her desire to perform at the event as a way of giving back and creating a meaningful impact.

She noted: "This act of giving back is what defines legendary individuals.”

Maurix began his musical journey in church and played the piano at Petit Seminaire Karubanda in 1997. In 2000, he established the Amis de la Paix (friends of peace) group in Kigeme.

After joining the University of Rwanda (UR), he joined Salus Populi, a drama and music club where he, along with other students, showcased their musical talents by playing both traditional Rwandan ‘oldies’ and their own original compositions. Eventually, Maurix gained recognition as a celebrated producer.
