MUHANGA — New transport agencies have opened their services in Muhanga and Ruhango towns creating a tight competition among transporters.

The two new companies Horizon and Tebuka Express started their services recently and ply the Muhanga-Kigali road.

However, passengers have welcomed the new entrants, saying they have broken the monopoly of Atraco Transport Agency in the area.

Each of the new operators has employed taxi touts- who loudly call upon passengers to take the ‘most reliable’ and ‘punctual’ bus.

The apparent competition has also benefited passengers in terms of reduced fares.

One of the buses, Tebuka Express, is offering Rwf200 price discount if one takes a return ticket.

"This competition works out well for us and we now have choices of transport unlike in the past. The cost of transport will become more affordable in the end,” said Samuel Niyigena, a passenger.

This competition has since last month caused noticeable decline in the number of passengers using the old buses in favour of the new ones.

However, some travellers say unless the new transport agencies procure more buses they would not out compete the old transport agency.
