Chess will be part of this year’s Kigali Corporate League scheduled to kick-off on September 1, according to the president of Rwanda Chess Federation, Kevin Ganza.

Ganza confirmed the development after attending the Rwanda Association for the Promotion of Sports among the Workforce (ARPST) General Assembly on Thursday.

However, the Chess federation boss noted that they are yet to discuss the league schedule but soon a list of institutions that will participate will be released as well as the number of players to be fielded per institution.

"For Chess, this is a good move as far as awareness is concerned. It will also be an opportunity for former players to sit again on the chessboard,” Ganza said.

He added "There are many people who know how to play but have never got the chance to showcase their talent due to time, but given that Friday afternoons are dedicated to sports for government institutions, they will be able to participate.”

ARPST president Johnson Niyonshuti has disclosed they will work closely with the local Chess governing body to organise, train and educate the player about the rules and regulations of the game.

According to Ganza, for one to participate in the Chess tournament, they must be an employee of a particular ministry or institution and it must be the one paying his taxes and pension.

The Kigali Corporate League, teams will compete in different sports activities namely; volleyball, basketball, table tennis, swimming, cycling, football and now chess.
