APR women and men volleyball teams will be out to win the 21st KAVC International Memorial Volleyball tournament, which gets underway on Saturday and end on Sunday in Kampala.

The two-day regional tournament will be staged at Lugogo Indoor Stadium as well as Namboole and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Nakawa.

Other Rwandan teams that have entered the event include; Rwanda Revenue Authority (women), defending champions, University of Kibungo (men), Kigali Volleyball Club (men), University of Tourism Technology and Business Studies (men), Gisagara and Rwanda Energy Group (men).

Before departing for Kampala on Thursday, APR women team coach Viateur Sibomana said, "It is one of the biggest tournaments in the region, so we need to be calm and ready for the challenge. Our target is to win the title. It will be very tough but we believe we’re capable of achieving it.”

The number of teams taking part has increased to about 36 teams from the 22 that competed last year.

Other foreign teams expected are; Muzinga and Rukinzo from Burundi, Kenya Administration Police, Prisons, Corporative Bank and Nairobi City Council, Administration Police, GSU (All from Kenya), Cobra Volleyball club (South Sudan) and Jeshi stars and Mangereza (Tanzania) in the men’s category.

Others are; KAVC A, KCCA, Matrix Volleyball Club, Western Volleyball Club, Uganda Prisons, KAVC B, Sport-S, Air Force and Sky Volleyball Club.

The women’s fray has; Aspire, Kenya Pipeline, KCB (All from Kenya), Jeshi Stars and Mangereza (Tanzania), KAVC A, KAVC B, Ndejje University, Nkumba University, KCCA, Espoir, Vision Volleyball Camp and Sport-S (Uganda) as well as Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA).

University of Kibungo won the men’s category last year after edging Sky Volleyball Club 3-2 in the finals, while Aspire Volleyball Club (Kenya) defeated Rwanda Revenue Authority 3-0 to win the women’s title.
