As part of its strategic goal in supplementing government effort to provide affordable and quality education towards nation building, Mount Kenya University (MKU) Senate recently resolved to restructure and continue offering programmes in identified areas of niche at its Kigali campus in two schools. The schools include: School of Health Sciences and School of Business, Information Technology and Social Sciences.

Prof Edwin Odhuno, the vice chancellor designate, told Education Times that the aim of this move is to make MKU a centre of excellence in areas where the university has a niche and a competitive advantage.”

He said MKU, which has constructed a modern campus in Kicukiro District, is now focusing on more infrastructure development such as sports facilities, hostels, a students’ centre and continuously recruiting experienced and highly qualified staff in various disciplines to ensure that the high quality training of its students in its areas of niche are maintained.

"As the University restructures its programmes, students will not be affected as the Senate approved a teaching out arrangement plan that will ensure they continue with their studies and graduate as envisaged. Those programmes that will not be offered locally will only be offered at the University’s main campus in Thika, Kenya effective September. Online distance e-learning will be strengthened and continue as usual,” he said.

Odhuno explained that among the programmes in the School of Health Sciences that will continue to be offered include Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Public Health, Masters of Science in Nursing, Masters of Science in Nursing and Masters in Public Health.

MKU is a chartered international university with campuses in Somaliland, Rwanda and major towns in Kenya.
