Kenyan driver Manvir Baryan, navigated by Drew Sturrock, won the Oryx Energy Rally, the fifth round of the African Rally Championship (ARC), which climaxed on Sunday in Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

Manvir, who clocked a total time of 2:21:35, regained the rally lead following day one leader Jaspreet Chatthe’s adversities that forced him out of the rally.

Manvir topped the race with six competitive stages out of eight, en-route to registering his second ARC win after victory during the Pearl of Africa Uganda rally in June.

Following victory in Tanzania, the Multiple Racing Team crew now leads the ARC standings with 65 points; 12 points ahead of Zambia’s Leroy Gomes, who could only manage sixth place in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X.

Tanzania’s Ahmed Huwel and Maisam Fazal, in a Ford Fiesta Proto finished in second position using 2:27:52, which also extended his lead in the National Championship.

The final podium position was taken by Harinder Deere and Moses Matovu in a Subaru Impreza STi N12, while Tanzanian crew of Miller Gerard/ Fox Peter in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, settled for fourth position.

Uganda’s Christakis Fitidis and his Rwanda navigator, Eric Nzamwita in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, finished fifth overall and second in the ARC category.

Rauf Adam Essa/Semakula George from Uganda in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X was sixth followed by Leroy Gomes and Dilraj Chatthe in seventh and eighth places respectively.

The Oryx Energy Rally had 12 causalities out of the 25 that started. Former ARC champion Jaspreet Chatthe was one of the high profile causalities, which limits his chances of reclaiming the African crown. Muna Singh, Randeep Singh, Yasin Nasser were among the causalities of the two-day event.
