Has the meaning of democracy changed?

Editor,

RE: "Your contribution is invaluable, RPF candidate tells Nyabugogo traders” (The New Times, July 20). Rwanda and Rwandans have once again proved the world wrong. United more than any time in history, Rwandans are running very thrilling and most peaceful campaign rallies, across the country.

The opposition candidate, Dr Frank Habineza, and independent Philippe Mpayimana too — despite this being their first time to contest any political office — have shown a sense of political maturity. So far, they acknowledge the work well done by the RPF. And they are campaigning on their own merits.

Accordingly, it is also a good lesson for the preachers of democracy to understand that if democracy means "rule of the majority” then Rwandans have done nothing to mend this meaning but only they are abiding by it..
