Amavubi forward Jacques Tuyisenge made history when he bacame the first Rwandan footballer to score against an English Premier League side as his Kenyan side Gor Mahia lost 1-2 to Everton on Thursday in a pre-season friendly played at the National Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

Everton were on a pre-season tour of Tanzania as part of their preparations for the upcoming Premier League season having signed a deal with Kenyan betting firm SportPesa as the club’s shirt sponsor.

It was a memorable encounter on two fronts, one it marked the first time that an East African team played against a Premier League side, and, secondly, former Manchester United captain and record goal scorer, Wayne Rooney, scored in his first game on return to his childhood club.

England captain Rooney, who rejoined Everton last week on a free transfer, burst into the limelight as a 16-year-old in Everton colours moving to Manchester United.

The 31-year old powered Everton into the lead in the 35th minute but the goal was short-lived as Gor Mahia levelled matters courtesy of a well taken header from Tuyisenge, but many news outlets wrongly attributed the goal to former Rwanda international, Meddie Kagere.

Kieran Dowell won the game for the ‘Toffees’ with eight minutes to the final whistle after unleashing an unstoppable shot.

The Gor Mahia team included three Rwandans namely; Tuyisenge, Kagere and holding midfielder Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza.
