Our programmes match the labour market demand – Prof. Musyoki at UoK 3rd Graduation ceremony

The Acting Vice Chancellor of University of Kigali, Prof Danson MUSYOKI Kimeu says that the University’s Academic programmes, both in Undergraduate and Masters were chosen and analyzed carefully to address the Labour Market skills gaps in Rwanda.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of University of Kigali, Prof Danson MUSYOKI Kimeu says that the University’s Academic programmes, both in Undergraduate and Masters were chosen and analyzed carefully to address the Labour Market skills gaps in Rwanda.

Prof. Musyoki said this while speaking at the recent concluded 3rd Graduation Ceremony of 130 students who graduated with degrees and diplomas in different disciplines, in an occasion held at the Magnificent Kigali Convention Center, Thursday July 6, 2017.

"Rwanda is becoming a centre of regional and international diplomacy, regional hub for business and Information Technology growth. As an Institution  dedicated  to provide the much needed human skills to support growth in these areas of priority, that’s why we chose and developed programmes that can address the Labour market demand skills gap", said the Kenyan Professor.

He told the Guests, Students and all the other people attending the event that more programs in Engineering, Fashion Technology and Design, Nursing, Pharmacy and Paramedical services to mention a few, were in the pipeline as the University expands its program offering to meet the developmental needs of  Rwanda and  the region. 

"The university started operations with 649 students in 2013 and has experienced rapid growth in enrolment to nearly 4800 students in the undergraduate programmes and more than 500 students in the post graduate programs which is recognition of the quality of our programs and the value that UoK delivers," added the acting Vice Chancellor.

In the Undergraduate Programmes, the courses offered include; Information Technology, Business Information Technology, Computer Science, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Procurement, Public Administration and Local Governance, Education and Law.

In the Masters Programmes, the courses offered include; Business Administration, Finance, Information Technology, Commerce, Public Administration, Project Management, Human Resource Management, Business Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Economics, Policy and Management, Education and Post Graduate Diploma in Education.

The University operates a School of Accountancy that offers training for professional programmes including ACCA, CIMA, CPA-R, CPA-K, CAT, ATD, CIFA and IPSAS.

UoK Centre for Economic Governance and Leadership (CEGL) offers professional and Executive Programmes and short courses to meet the unique needs of the Private and Public Sectors in Rwanda and the Region.

 

Chancellor Macrae to UoK graduands:Focus on higher qualifications

The Chancellor of University of Kigali, Dr David MACRAE advised a group of 130 students who graduated with degrees and diplomas in different disciplines, during the third graduation ceremony of University of Kigali, held at the Magnificent Kigali Convention Center, Thursday July 6, 2017 to aim at Higher Qualifications in a modern rapidly changing world.

"The opportunities which may be opening up in the modern world of advanced technology and efficient management, may require you to do further courses of study leading to further academic qualifications, such as masters courses or PhDs, or training courses as required for many occupations’’, the senior University Official said in his address during the function.

He added that the world was changing so fast with old outdated skills being overtaken by new skills and methods. 

Dr. Macrae reminded the students that the modern jobs market calls on various professionals to acquire all manner of capabilities some of which may not have been invented as recently as even twenty years ago.

The UoK Chancellor appreciates and values a lot the efforts made by President Paul KAGAME and his Government in the development of the Education Sector in the Country.

"I thank the President who values a lot the importance of education in the development of his country. This has been demonstrated by the Government’s endless efforts in investing in the development of the Education Sector to set a solid foundation for the Human Resource Capacity building.

Indeed this has transformed this country and placed it in a position of a fast growing Economy in Africa and the world as a whole,’’ Says Macrae, a Career Diplomat and former Head of the EU delegation to Rwanda.

Finally, the Chancellor thanked the University Promoters for their commitment in making University of Kigali, one of the leading private Higher Institutions of Learning in the country that aims at producing graduates who are capable of addressing the country’s economic and social needs.

 

Apply knowledge to transform society, Nshuti tells UoK Graduands

Kigali, Rwanda - A total of 130 students who graduated  with degrees and diplomas in different disciplines, during the third  graduation ceremony of University of Kigali , held at the Magnificent Kigali Convention Center, Thursday July 6, 2017 have been reminded that getting a degree is one thing  and applying it to transform society is another one. This was emphasized by Prof. NSHUTI Manasseh, Promoter, Co-founder and Chairman, Board of Promoters of University of Kigali while speaking at the University’s Third Graduation Ceremony.

Prof. NSHUTI, an accomplished Professor of Finance, Senior Academician and Education Manager from Institutions not only in Rwanda but also in the Region and beyond, is among Rwandans that sat down and thought of passing on over his 23 years of University teaching and administrative experience to establish a University that has now positioned itself as one of the fastest growing Private Higher Institutions of Learning in the country and the East African Region as a whole.

He strongly believes that Knowledge should be acquired to transform society. In other wards such development should offer solutions to the social, economic and political problems that have posed serious challenges to the transformation of society in most developing countries.

"Education has a beginning but it does not have an end. You should continue studies beyond this point and upgrade your knowledge at higher levels, in order to be in position to compete successfully on the labour market that is so demanding. As soon as you are incorporated in the market, you should also create a big impact in the transformation of society for development” Prof. NSHUTI said, cheered by a crowd of 130 graduands gathered at the Kigali Convention Center for the function.

The Chairman UoK Board of Promoters told various guests including Government Officials, Diplomats, Heads of Various Higher Institutions of Learning, Academicians, Politicians, Parents, Guardians and Students that the University had expanded tremendously within a spell of three years offering programmes that suit the labour market needs.

He pointed out that the Institution’s top priority is and remains the promotion and maintenance of Quality Education Standards to produce professionals that can address the social and economic development needs of the country and also be job creators instead of job seekers to fit in the country’s programme of the development of the Private Sector and Employment creation.

The third graduation ceremony follows the ones held in 2015 and at the beginning of this year. Since its establishment, University of Kigali has graduated more than 900 students in different academic disciplines in Undergraduate, Masters, Post Graduate Diploma in Education and Professional Courses Programmes.

Kigali, Rwanda-University of Kigali, Thursday, July 6, 2017, graduated a total of 130 students who were awarded degrees and diplomas in different disciplines.  The ceremony, that took place at the Magnificent Kigali Convention Center, was presided over by Prof. Jeffrey David SACHS, special adviser to the UN Secretary General, on Sustainable Development Goals. 

Prof. SACHS, a renowned Professor of Economics at the New York based Columbia University, also doubles as the Director of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the New York based Earth Institute.

Speaking at the Ceremony, the UN official thanked the University for inviting him to officiate at this ceremony.  He acknowledged the promoters for their efforts that has made the Institution grow very first in the shortest possible time.

UoK is at the forefront in showing progress in the development of the Education Sector in Rwanda. This is part of the inspiration that your Government has shown not only what we are witnessing today but also in the other sectors of the economy. This is why it has been chosen to be the centre of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Africa. He cautioned the graduates that as young people, they are in the lead and need to work hard as they face the challenge of transforming Rwanda, Africa and the world at large.

Mr. Sachs is among the top world officials that were in Kigali attending an International Conference on ‘’Mobilizing African Intellectuals towards Quality Tertiary Education’’ that is one of the strategies for the achievement of the sustainable development goals in Africa.
