EASTERN PROVINCE

NYAGATARE—It was all joy in Matimba Sector as 106 couples tied knots in a mass wedding. The ceremony was presided over by the district finance director Dominique Nkubiri, who hailed the couples for respecting the law by legalising their marriages before the civil administration.

"Am very optimistic that all couples have made the right choice to live together in harmony and to cherish each other. This is a special day for this sector as thousands are witnessing for those tying knots to live till death separates you,” Nkubiri said.

During the mass wedding, Emmanuel Tumusime, the Matimba sector executive secretary revealed that over 70% of residents living in Matimba have already legalised their marriages. He noted that legalizing marriages helps Rwandans live in conflict-free homes.

"All local leaders right from village level to the sector all tied knots in civil marriages in a campaign to act as an example to the sector residents. At the sector level today, family conflicts have decreased, which is an indicator since many have got to grasp the reason behind civil marriages. The campaign has opened people’s eyes towards property rights,” Tumusime observed.

He said that since this campaign started, family conflicts in relation to domestic violence have decreased compared to the many cases the sector used to handle every month.
