College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine wins Capital Market University Challenge 2017

The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM) was on Friday declared winners of the Capital Market University Challenge 2017 at the Kigali Serena Hotel.

The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM) was on Friday declared winners of the Capital Market University Challenge 2017 at the Kigali Serena Hotel.

The three week competition was part of public education and awareness aimed at inculcating the culture of savings and investment particularly through capital market among students as well as interesting them in the industry as future professionals.

The students were drawn from 21 universities and other higher learning institutions across the country covering more than 300 students countrywide.

The winners were awarded Rwf 1 million to buy shares in any listed company of their choice. 

The competition was organized by Capital Markets Authority in collaboration with the Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE), Economic Policy Research Network and the International Association of Students in Economic and Commercial Science (AISSEC).

Students were subjected to challenges which included a quiz to test their knowledge of the capital market industry, and essay writing on the theme, "Growing the youth through capital market.”

The College of Business and Economics Huye campus in Southern province came second while ULK-Gisenyi from western province was ranked in the third place.

Students say that the competition enabled them gain insights into the savings culture as well as careers in the sector.

Matilde Murebwayire who scooped Rwf100, 000 in essay writing from College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM), said that Capital Market Challenge University helped her to get more knowledge about the culture of saving.

Robert Mathu, CMA Executive Director said that the Capital Market Challenge is part of the public education and awareness campaign and to teach how capital market works.

"We need to create awareness and increase knowledge among university students about the capital markets and financial sector; we need to instill in students the culture of saving and investment as future professions and investors,” he said.

This is the third edition of The University Challenge which started in 2012 targeting undergraduate students in all universities and other higher learning institutions in Rwanda.
