Sticking with what I know

I’m a creature of habit and I like to do certain things at certain times in a certain way and so it’s no surprise that I also like to use specific products, especially when it comes to groceries and supplies in general.

There are a number of products I’ve used since I was a child and I have to say I’m so glad they’re still on the market although some have been altered or tweaked here and there but for the most part, they’re still effective and reliable.

These include basics like skin care products and detergent and because I’ve used them for years, I know exactly what to expect and so usually don’t have consumer anxiety which is what you get when you try a new product.

It’s always nice to try something new every now and then and I have in fact discovered some great products through trying something different but I have to say it doesn’t always go well. If I don’t get a bad reaction, I find the product wanting and end up going back to what I’m used to and in the process, spend more money than I intended to. Like the time a friend couldn’t stop talking about her new shampoo so I decided to try it.

A week later, I had the worst bout of dandruff. Another time, I let a hawker convince me into buying a nicely packaged body lotion. I know, I shouldn’t have but I did and paid dearly when I got a nasty rash.

In case you’re wondering why I don’t just stick with products I’ve tried and tested, well, two reasons. Most established brands are expensive and there will always be times when you have to spend the money on more pressing demands and so have to settle for alternatives. The other reason is a demand and supply issue.

Due to popular demand, some products run out and you have to go with the next best thing because you’re not going to wait two or three months for your favourite deodorant or toothpaste which you need on a daily basis so it’s unrealistic to wait until your local retailer restocks!

I have to say I find it strange that some people don’t care what products they use. You know that "soap is soap” argument? Not me. I’m one of those people who will go to 10 different places in one shopping trip just so I get exactly what I need where other people would just pick whatever is available at their first stop. I guess if it works for you, then by all means go for it but like I said earlier, I find it odd when someone walks up to me and asks for perfume or lipstick and they don’t seem to care at all what kind I have.

That’s why I’m appreciative of hosts who go out of their way to offer options and I endeavour to do the same whenever I have friends over. Don’t just serve coffee and expect everybody to drink it all up. Let your guests choose between tea, juice and whatever else you can afford.
