Members of staff from SONARWA, one of Rwanda’s leading insurance companies, have provided support in mattresses worth Rwf4.8m to 100 genocide survivors in Bugesera District.

The SONARWA Managing Director, Tony Twahirwa, said the support is part their activities in remembering 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"We thought of you as our neighbours who were affected by genocide against the Tutsi. It is part of our role to support and to restore your dignity as we have been doing so to others with the same problems as you,” he told the survivors.

The survivors include those whose family members were wiped out during genocide and remain alone, widows and widowers, orphans among other vulnerable survivors.

"We know that you are still facing sorrow due to the atrocities and therefore we have to play a role in healing your hearts. We are emphasizing the notion of Never Again, where we must all do our best to fight genocide ideology, strive for unity and reconciliation by combating whoever can divide Rwandans,” he said.

He remarked that SONARWA show of solidarity is part of building the nation, striving for self-sustaining while fighting against whatever could derail the efforts.

Berancile Bagirinka, one of the beneficiaries said the support came in handy as she has no any relative alive to turn to. 

"All my family members were killed during genocide. I have no child to support me, only good Samaritans intervene to support me.”

Christine Uwimana, another genocide survivor said that she appreciates the support.

"The support comes in as a supplement to the direct support we get. I am happy that I will be sleeping comfortably,” she said.

Eric Ruzindaza , the Vice mayor of Bugesera District urged the survivors to put their efforts together in supporting one another towards sustainable hope adding that partners should always keep in mind the needs of genocide survivors.
