Rwanda’s Weightlifting and Powerlifting Federation has announced that it will send a men’s team to represent the country in the Africa Junior and Youth Championships scheduled from October 7-14 in Kampala, Uganda.

According to the federation’s secretary-general Just Bwanakweli, two or three top performers will be selected from this year’s inaugural Genocide memorial tournament that is due to take place in June.

"We shall send two or three participants depending on the budget and these will be selected after the memorial competition,” he said.

It will be the first time that local athletes will be participating in the continental competition.

Uganda will be the first East African country to host Africa’s major event after the change of Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA) governance that happened in the Electro Congress in February in Algiers, Algeria. Over 29 member countries are expected to participate in the event.
