Rwanda Energy Group (REG) men’s basketball club is aiming to win the 2024 Legacy Basketball Tournament which tips off on Friday, January, 26 at Lycée de Kigali Gymnasium.

REG will field two teams, men and women, in the competition which is organised annually to honour Shampiyona Aimable and Jean De Dieu Nizeyimana, the founders of local side United Generation Basketball (UGB), who pioneered the team’s legacy of promoting, developing and empowering future leaders and athletes through basketball.

REG men start their quest for the title on Friday, January 26, when they take on Group A rivals and holders UGB while, in Group B, APR will go head to head with PAZI.

It will be Charles Mushumba’s first test since he penned a three-year deal to coach REG in November 2023.

Mushumba told Times Sport that his men are looking to win the Legacy tournament to boost their morale ahead of the new season.

"We have started preparations in order to have a chance to compete for the national league title. But before the start of the season, we are setting our eyes on the Legacy tournament,” he said.

Preliminary games will take place at LDK Gymnasium and the finals at the BK Arena.

Participating teams for 2024 edition:

Men: UGB, REG, APR, and PAZI.

Women: REG, The Hoops, IPRC-Huye and Kepler

Veteran teams: UGB, CSK, Gorillas Stars and SOS.
