RE: "Govt issues strong warning to contractors” (The New Times, April 26).

This lack of professionalism can be too costly for the city and its citizens. Just imagine the financial damage caused by a lack of internet in the city.

Contractors sometimes think of accomplishing the work in the shortest time possible and neglect to supervise their engineers. This could have been avoided.

Let’s hope that culprits will be punished, which must serve as a warning to other contractors and engineers.

I believe how police intervenes in cases of professional negligence need to be better defined. Unless death/serious injuries are involved which has a criminal aspect of endangering life, all other professional negligence cases do not warrant a police arrest.

The most suitable way is fining/punishing the construction company and/or for the affected consumers to seek compensation from the fiber optic/internet services provider through the existing service level agreements in place.

The internet services provider will then seek compensation from the contractor through a legal process (could be judicial or out of court settlements).

Otherwise, unfortunately, professional negligence will always occur and it’s up to the company to deal with its employers accordingly, not the job of the police if no criminal aspects are involved.
