Clerics who committed genocide should be excommunicated

Editor,

RE: "CNLG, survivors welcome Rwanda Vatican talks” (The New Times, March 21). What the Church should do now is to excommunicate and distance itself from clerics that had a hand in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Then it would be up to judicial systems to know what to do next.

I know the Church has sort of looked the other way and allowed those priests to work in different parishes around the world, but has there been a political will in their host countries to arrest them? Would France prosecute Fr Wenceslas Munyeshyaka if he’s excommunicated by the Church?

I believe it would be hard for the Church to shield criminals if there was sufficient political will (on the part of host countries) to bring them to book. But having said that, the Holy See should at least do its part by excommunicating these priests.
