Debutant UNIK target top ten finish at Africa Club Championships

University of Kibugo (UNIK) Volleyball Club have set  themselves a target of finishing in the top ten places in their maiden Men’s African Club Championships that will be held on March 15-28 in Tunis, Tunisia.

Ngoma-based side are scheduled to fly to Tunisia today (Tuesday) at 1p.m aboard a Qatar Airways flight for this year’s edition that will attract the best clubs from across the continent.

Speaking to Times Sport, club head coach Dominique Ntawangundi confirmed that his side will be aiming for a good position. "This is our first time to compete in a continental competition and we will probably need to first adapt but we want to challenge ourselves to finish in the top ten places,” he said.

Ntawangundi was due to travel with a team of 12 players, including two setters, three centre players, two outside attackers, four receiver-attackers and one libero.

Last season, UNIK won the domestic league title, the Genocide Memorial tourney, the KAVC Memorial tournament (staged in Kampala, Uganda) and the Carre d’AS competition.

Meanwhile, women defending champions Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) will travel to Tunisia on April, 3 ahead of the women’s tournament which will be staged in Carthage from April 5-18.

The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) has set February 28 as the final date for clubs to confirm their participation in the continental event.

The winners of the two-week tournament will represent Africa at the 2017 Men and Women’s World Club Championships.
