APR, Police win as handball league title race hots up

The battle for the 2017 handball league title has intensified between top two contenders Police and APR following their victories over the weekend to ensure they both kept their hopes alive.

The battle for the 2017 handball league title has intensified between top two contenders Police and APR following their victories over the weekend to ensure they both kept their hopes alive.

The two sides had two games to play on Saturday and Sunday and they both secured comfortable wins to extend their winning runs.

Three-time league champions Police, bidding for a fourth consecutive title, defeated Ecole Secondaire Kigoma 42-33 at Kigoma ground with Zacharie Tuyishime netting 11 goals for the law-enforcers.

And, on Sunday, Antoine Ntabanganyimana’s side Police thrashed Karongi-based side Ecole Secondaire Urumuri 54-18 at Birambo ground to stretch their unbeaten run to eight games, thus remaining at the summit, with 24 points.

Norbert Duteteriwacu contributed 12 goals to help his side to victory.

Meanwhile, APR, seeking to end a seven-year title jinx, overpowered Gatsibo-based and newcomers ADEGI Gituza 42-28 goals in a game during which ADEGI’s Yves Kayijamahe emerged the game’s best scorer with 12 goals.

Later on Sunday, Anaclet bagirishya’s side beat Kigoma 51-27 with the help of Shaffy Niyonkuru, who contributed 13 goals.

APR remain second with 19 points having played a game less.

In the other games played over the weekend, ADEGI defeated University of Rwanda’s College of Arts and Social Sciences (UR-CASS) 42-20, with ADEGI’s Thiery Hakizimana netting 11 times.

Nyakabanda defeated Inyemeramihigo 43-37 inspired by Etienne Nizeyumukiza who scored the game’s high 12 goals.

After eight rounds of play, Kigoma are third with 16 points and tied on points with fourth-placed ADEGI, while Saint. Aloys Rwamagana are in fifth with 14 points, with Nyakabanda in the sixth place, also with 14 points.

In seventh are Inyemeramihigo with 13 points followed by ES Urumuri in eighth with eight points, while UR-CASS and Rambura occupy the bottom two slots with three and two points, respectively.
