Editor,

RE: "Regional MPs, traders discuss proposed ban on plastic bags” (The New Times, March 11).

Banning of plastic bags in East Africa sounds good in theory; however, it’s very hard for Uganda and Kenya to absolutely ban them because there will be massive job losses in the tens of thousands.

EAC should focus on control and ensure that the bags are thick in size hence can be recycled with ease.

Plastic bags should be banned; they have brought a lot of environmental pain. Drainages have been blocked, livestock have been choked, marine life killed, brought about air pollution, difficultly in reusing dumpsites, it’s an eyesore...

There is more good in banning these bags than keeping them.
