Gato Keza: The little coffee shop with a big heart

This week, I thought I’d revisit the coffee shop scene. This decision was arrived at due to the fact that I was already seated in this coffee shop, sipping on a cappuccino and watching AL Jazeera on the biggest television I’ve ever seen.

Gato Keza is nestled between two wings of the building that houses the Kwetu Film Institute in Gacuriro. Originally, I think this was an atrium but the space was cleverly converted into a small coffee shop. Film makers, expatriates and the general public make up the customer base. Limited in size, Gato Keza can’t take on too many patrons but nonetheless, they do try.

Upon entering, one is greeted with the familiar aroma that only coffee shops emit. The walls are plastered with upcoming events at the film institute and photos of past events. Not intending to be left out, Gato Keza has strategically placed a blackboard notifying people about the day’s specials.

The actual menu comprises of a breakfast section and the standard sandwiches. On this day, I was quite hungry and the club sandwich was the right option. It is also very affordable.

I must say the club sandwich is a good deal and very well made. The bread was really fresh and the picture does not do it justice. One must eat it for a true testament to its good taste and the neat build of the fillings.

Guests have a choice of what fillings they desire and I think this adds to that personal touch.

Gato Keza punches above its weight in the food department.

The service is casual and almost personal, like the kind of attention you’d get from visiting a friend or family. One literally feels at home. Gato evokes a lazy chill, one where a book would make for good company.

I look forward to another visit, to eat something else and get enveloped in timelessness. Gato is that kind of coffee shop.

Gato Keza is open daily till 11pm.
