RAF set for IAAF World X-Country final selection today

Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) will today make the final selection for the athletes that will represent the country at the forthcoming 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships slated for March 26 in Uganda.

WednesdayNational Cross Country championship 8 am Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) will today make the final selection for the athletes that will represent the country at the forthcoming 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships slated for March 26 in Uganda.

The 10-kilometre race will be held at Kicukiro ground where its scheduled to start at 8am and will attract all athletics clubs in the country including APR, Mountain Classic Athletics, Sec academy and Kamonyi athletics club.

In a recent interview, RAF president Jean Paul Munyandamutsa said only 10 athletes will be selected from this championship and will represent the country in two categories namely; the senior men’s team that comprises six athletes and a mixed relay team of two males and two females.

Munyandamutsa further added that the selected athletes will later head to Kampala for their final training camp.

"After the selection, the athletes will immediately go for a training camp in Uganda. We are yet to determine where exactly they will camp, but of course the place has to be near where the main event will take place. We hope to have sorted out everything before the final selection,” said Munyandamutsa.

The one-day IAAF World Cross Country Championships will be hosted at the Kololo Independence ceremonial ground in Kampala.

Rwanda will be looking to improve on its performances and probably win their first ever medal in the world’s prestigious event after it ranked eighth during the 2015 edition held in the Chinese city of Guiyang.
