Patriots beat APR, set eyes on win against CSK

Following victory against APR on Friday night, national basketball league reigning champions Patriots will be hoping for a routine win over struggling Cercle Sportif de Kigali today at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

The win for Henry Mwinuke’s team on Friday in a tightly contested game propelled them to the top of the table on the expense of former champions Espoir and improving their win ratio to 6:1.

Patriots took the first quarter 21-19 before both sides tied 20-20 in the second quarter. APR snatched the third quarter 18-17 but Patriots bounced to win the final quarter 26-19 to wrap up the game 84-76, thanks to center Junior Ambol’s game-high 17 points.

"Tonight the game was intense and very fast and I think the best team won, but we’re taking one game at a time. The focus in now is on Sunday’s (today) game against CSK,” said Mwinuke.

In another game played on Friday, league newcomers Rwanda Energy Group (REG) thumbed 30-Plus 149-41. Jean Bahufite’s team dominated all the four quarters; 38-10, 34-2, 45-16 and 33-13 respectively.

The Patriots against CSK match will be preceded by another league encounter pitting the Heroes’ Day tournament champions IPRC- Kigali against 30-Plus. Both games take place at Amahoro Indoor stadium.

Refs’ seminar underway

Meanwhile, a 10-day seminar for 45 local basketball referees started on Friday and will run throughout February 19 at Amahoro national stadium.

The program which majorly targets junior referees is conducted by Rwanda’s three renowned referees Didier Shema Maboko, Straton Ahimana and Didier Gaaga.

This platform aims at sharing experience, physical fitness and theory knowledge assessment as well as equipping participants with up-to-date trends and techniques to lead a basketball game.
