"There are accounts we have heard of people who are attacked in churches. The Government has committed to deal with the culprits,” he said, drawing a huge round of applause from the congregation made up largely with ADEPR church leaders and Christians representatives from across the country.
"Continue being at the forefront of supporting the government’s initiatives intended to achieve development and social welfare as well as security for Rwandans”.
A gang carrying machetes, spears, clubs and other traditional weapons, Thursday night attacked worshipers at an ADEPR church in Ngoma, Huye District and injured nine.
According to reports, during the assault, the attackers mocked the victim to call on their God to save them from their wrath.
The Spokesperson of Police in Southern Province, Chief Inspector of police André Hakizimana told Sunday Times on Saturday that nine suspects were arrested while investigations continue. "Some have been arrested and are being interrogated,” he said.
"We have a strong network for information gathering on issues that can destabilise security, mainly working with people at grassroots level,” he said.
He said that a meeting between the police and local leadership was held whereby they reminded people their responsibility in ensuring security by providing timely information to security organs.
"People should not neglect anything. They should report any unusual case,” he said.
Victims are recovering
The Director of University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) in Huye District, Dr. Augustin Sendegeya, told Sunday Times that on Thursday night, the hospital received 25 people but most had no injuries but were traumatized by the incident and later discharged.
According to Dr. Sendegeya, only two among the wounded are still being attended to by medics at the hospital and the others were discharged.
"One had sustained pain in his chest, may be from a blow. The other had a fractured arm. We continue to offer them medical care,” he said.
