As part of their drive to take the sport in refugee camps, the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF) this week made the first such initiative in Kiziba camp, located in Karongi district, Western Province.
The initiative is part of wider agenda between Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and RTF to introduce and promote the sport among the vulnerable populations, in addition to implementing humanitarian projects in refugee camps in Rwanda.
RFT secretary general, Placide Mugabo, explained that, "The refugees in this camp, especially the youth were thrilled and showed eagerness to learn the sport.”
Taekwondo is one of the two Asian martial arts included on the Olympic programme. The sport made its debut as a demonstration Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Games, and became an official medal sport at the 2000 Sydney Games.
