Speaking to Saturday Times, yesterday, the Deputy Police Spokesperson, Lynder Nkuranga, said while Police and other partners are ready to ensure security of revellers and the public in general, everyone should ensure they celebrate peacefully without interruptions.
"We want peaceful celebrations which will not tamper with the security of others, revellers should celebrate in a peaceful way that do not interrupt others and ensure that they avoid the noise that is too much to inconvenience neighbours,” she said.
Earlier, three public institutions joined efforts to ensure that the festive season is safe, fun and convenient for Kigali residents.
They include Rwanda Development Board (RDB) that has demanded service providers to be at their best to ensure service delivery without any interruption.
Police have reassured of safety and the City of Kigali is out to ensure planned events run smoothly.
Celestin Twahirwa, the commissioner for community policing at Rwanda National Police, reminded motorists to be extra careful and cautioned against drink-driving.
He said it was one of the major security risks at this time of the year and advised the use of designated drivers or taxis.
Meanwhile, three people died in two separate road accidents over the weekend of Christmas holidays.
On fireworks
Nkuranga said the New Year celebrations will be marked by fireworks displays to night in various venues where celebrations will be taking place adding that communication will be made to ensure the public is aware of the fireworks.
"There will be fireworks in the City of Kigali in various venues and I think it will be done in an organised way. I am not going to be specific on particular places but this is not the first time it happens and we will have to communicate so that people should not be scared,” she said.
Available information indicate that one of the venues for fireworks include the Kigali Convention Centre.
