Mixed fortunes for shoppers in Kigali

Most food and commodity prices remain largely stable in markets across the City of Kigali ahead of the New Year festivities, a mini-survey by The New Times shows. The price of Irish potatoes dropped to Rwf280 a kilogramme from above Rwf300 previously, while fresh beans cost Rwf500 per kilo and fresh peas are at Rwf1,300 per kilogramme.

A bunch of bananas (plantains) ranges from Rwf6,500 to Rwf8,000, depending on size, and a kilo of banana fingers goes for Rwf400 in most markets across the city and suburbs. That of sweet potatoes costs Rwf290. The price of onions went up by Rwf100 to Rwf1,000 per kilo in Nyabugogo Market, from Rwf900 a week back. Cabbages range from Rwf400 to Rwf500 each, depending on size in Kimironko Market and carrots go for Rwf700 a kilo in Nyarugenge market.

A kilo of beef goes for Rwf2,200 in most areas across the city, and it is at Rwf3,800 in Nakumatt and Simba supermarkets. Bread (weighing 1kg) ranges from Rwf900 to Rwf2,000, depending on the brand, type or size and whether one buys from a supermarket or ordinary shops.

Passion fruits are unchanged at Rwf1,200 per kilogramme, mangoes cost Rwf1,400 per kilo, while oranges cost between Rwf1,200 and Rwf1,300 a kilo in Nyarugenge market. The price of pine apples ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600 each, depending on size, and watermelons are between Rwf3,000 and Rwf3,300 each in Batsinda Market.

A kilo of sugar costs 1,100. A bar of soap ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf600, depending on location or whether one buys from a neighbourhood shop or supermarket, and a five-litre jerry can of vegetable cooking oil is at Rwf6,200 in Kabeza Market.
