Editor, The fire outbreak at Nyarugenge 1930 prison should act as a wakeup call.

While the cause of the Monday fire was not readily established, one could easily suspect electrical short circuit.

In this regard, Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) should make those installations for MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) compliant and this must be given a timeline so soon. We have many useful personnel in that prison and data that we cannot afford to lose them because RHA is busy regulating buildings outside cities while forgetting country’s prisons.

I am confident that something is going to be done immediately.

More so, the concerned ministry should renovate prisons now since a wake-up call has now been received. I understand we have units in Police and Army which can do these works professionally.
