Political parties will play a more active role in supporting the country’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This was announced, Thursday, by the National Consultative Forum of Political Organisations, which brings together all the registered political parties in the country.

The announcement was made during a meeting to discuss the achievements of Millennium Development Goals and implementation of SDGs.

Phoebe Kanyange, the spokesperson for the Forum, said they would like to see the livelihoods of the Rwandan people improve even more.

"We are ready to take lead in implementing these goals through working more closely with the citizens. We are also going to rally political parties to align their manifesto with these goals so as to contribute to their implementation,” Kanyange said.

The Minister of State in charge of Economic Planning, Dr Uzziel Ndagijimana, spoke of the importance of political organisations in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ndagijimana pointed out that the successful implementation of the previous MDGs was a result of partnerships from various stake holders.

"Political organisations have many supporters and their voice can be heard. They can guide their supporters. Achieving these goals requires partnership and involvement of different players,” Ndagijimana said.

Representatives of political organisations commended the progress the country has made in implementing the development goals. They called for protection and sustenance of what has been achieved.

The forum comprises 11 political organisations; The Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF Inkontanyi), Liberal Party (PL), Democratic Union of Rwandan People (UDPR), Ideal Democratic Party (PDI), Social Democratic Party (PSD), and Party for Progress and Concord (PPC).

Others are Centrist Democratic Party (PDC), Rwandese Socialist Labour Party (PSR), Party for Solidarity and Progress (PSP), Social Party Imberakuri (PS Imberakuri), and Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR).
