APR FC right back Michel Rusheshangoga scored a stunning right-footed volley in stoppage time to help the defending champions win 2-1 against Sunrise on Sunday at Kigali Regional Stadium.

With a game in hand against Pepiniere, the win took the army side back in second position with 17 points, five behind table leaders Rayon Sports, who hammered Gicumbi FC 5-2 earlier on Saturday, while Sunrise dropped to eighth place with 8 points.

Jimmy Mulisa’s team took the lead in the 14th minute through 16-year-old striker Innocent Nshuti off Janvier Benedata’s neat pass, but Cyprien Sinamenye equalised for the visitors in the 76th minute before Rusheshangoga secured all three points with a late goal from about 40 yards.

"In general, I thought it was a great performance against a tough Sunrise side and it’s important we won the match. We had to come out with a good performance and we did, we weren’t just good on the ball, but we were good off the ball as well,” Rusheshangoga said after the game.

Meanwhile, Bugesera beat Amagaju 2-1 at Nyamata ground. Ugandan striker Farouk Ssentongo netted the opening goal for Vincent Mashami’s team in the 42nd minute before David Saibath Nzabandita made it 2-0- three minutes after the break.

Yves Bokotola scored a 90th minute consolation goal for struggling Amagaju FC, who remains second from bottom with four points from eight matches.

Elsewhere, SC Kiyovu overcame Etincelles 3-1 at Umuganda Stadium to move to 10th position with 11 points.

Kambale Salita gave the hosts the lead in the 20th minute but Jean Claude Nizeyinama equalized for Aloys Kanamugire’s team eight minutes later, Mustafa Francis added the second in the 32nd minute before Jean Claude Nizeyimana completed the comeback in the 70th minute.

Hamisi ‘Kishi’ Songonya’s Kirehe FC lost at home against Espoir 0-1, the lone goal was scored by Felicien Nkurunziza in the 23rd minute. Police FC beat bottom side Pepiniere 2-1 on Saturday to stay in third place, level with APR on 17 points.
