A visiting Lesotho delegation has been impressed by strong partnership between government and private sector in various development aspects.

The delegation came to Rwanda for study tour in the area of tourism from November 20 to 24.

While in Rwanda, the five-member delegation from Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation held meetings with officials at Rwanda Development Board, Rwanda Tourism Chamber, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and visited Musanze communities benefiting from 5 per cent of tourism revenues.

The head of the delegation and Chief Executive Officer of Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC), Mpaiphele D. Maqutu, said that Lesotho and Rwanda share a lot in common, such as size, but a decision to visit Rwanda was driven by the country profile and its development agenda.

"To us Rwanda is a shining star, we looked at the country profile and we were convinced that we will learn a lot from a sound leadership here,” said Maqutu.

Some of key takeaways about the partnership between government and the private sector, include formulation of clear and conducive policies, strategies to implement policies, private sector involvement and balancing conservation and business development to ensure sustainability.

While briefing the team about the growth of tourism, especially tours and travel business, the Chairperson of Rwanda Tours and Travel Association (RTTA) Joseph Birori, said there is support from leadership which sets the pace for everyone.

"There is trust developed between the government and private sector that brings the synergies and commitment because we need each other to drive the country’s development agenda,” Birori said.

Last year, the country’s tourism industry fetched 1.3 million arrivals.
