Once informed, we can beat breast cancer

RE: "Women urged on early cancer screening” (The New Times, November 9).

It is very encouraging to see breast cancer awareness campaign continuing beyond October, the global breast cancer awareness month.

For me, breast cancer awareness should be part of our daily routine until all of Rwandans, East Africans, and others are aware of and understand the devastating impact of this disease so that, individually and collectively, we can fight it through prevention, control and practicing early detection methods that increase survival rates.

It is a fact that breast cancer is not a death sentence and that early detection can save lives. It is also a fact that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime while men can also get it.

Please take this opportunity to participate in this life-changing campaign: knowledge is power and remember everything you do begins with you.

Let’s start to imagine of a Rwanda of informed, healthy and productive citizens. As we forge ahead towards a world free of cancer, let’s always remember that, together, we are stronger!
