President Paul Kagame yesterday joined world leaders in congratulating US President-elect Donald Trump.

In his congratulatory message via Twitter, President Kagame said that he looks forward to a continued good relationship with the United States and its new administration.

"Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump for a well earned victory. Looking fwd to continued good relationship w/ United States & new administration,” the President tweeted yesterday afternoon.

To become the 45th president of the United States, Trump garnered over 59 million popular votes and 276 Electoral College votes, six above the required minimum.

To win presidency, American presidential candidates need to secure at least 270 electoral college votes out of possible 538. This is usually by winning individual states that each award a certain number of votes.

His victory was secured after capturing Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes securing the win over Clinton who came second with 218 Electoral College votes.

In what turned out as a surprise outcome to most across the world including a section of American voters, Trump won votes in major battleground states such as Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.

The President-elect pledged to work to unify all Americans and to be a leader of all American citizens regardless of their political affiliations.

In his acceptance speech, he revealed that Clinton had called him to congratulate him on his victory. Later in the day, Clinton conceded defeat.

In what appeared as an assurance on positive foreign policies and international relations, Trump said that under his leadership, America was willing to get along with other nations.

"We will get along with all other nations willing to get along with us. We will deal fairly with everyone. We will seek common ground, partnership not conflict,” he said.

Trump, 70, rose to fame as a reality Television star with interest in real estate, among other sectors.

Several world leaders yesterday congratulated Trump and promised to work with him. Among them include Russian President Vladamir Putin, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
