Rwanda national volleyball team captain Christophe Mukunzi is set to join Bulgarian first division side VC Marek Union-Ivkoni but after undergoing a  knee surgery Thursday (today). 

Last season, Mukunzi suffered a meniscus tear but he was promised by VC Marek Union-Ivkoni to be operated on before he can play for them next year, effective January. The former Kigali Volleyball Club right-attacker is now set to sign a one-year contract. 

"My operation will be on Thursday and I believe everything will be fine and, hopefully, return to the field as soon as possible. I have got the team but they will first operate on me before I could sign the contract” Mukunzi told Times Sport. 

He noted that, "They have promised to take care of me during the recovery period and after that I will start to play in January when the league second round starts.”  

The 27-year-old right-attacker has been playing for Turkish topflight division side Payas Belediye Club for the last one year.

Mukunzi played for Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC) since 2007 before turning professional four years later when he joined Libyan side Tarsana Club. He also played for Blida Club of Algeria, Qatari side Al Arabi Sports Club, Algerian side El Fanar Ain-Azel Club and Turkey (Payas Belediye Sport Club). 

Mukunzi was named best receiver in 2013 Zone V Championships and was voted best player in Blida Volleyball Club for the 2011/12 season. 

Meanwhile, another Rwandan player, Placide Madison Sibomana, has signed a one-year deal with Qatari side Al-Gharafa Sports Club.
