Rayon Sports’ superb start to the 2016/17 Azam Rwanda Premier League season suffered an early setback after they were held to a goalless draw in Rusizi by Espoir FC on Saturday.

The Peace Cup reigning champions kicked off their season with a comfortable win 3-0 win against Police; however, they were denied a chance to double their tally by Jimmy Ndayizeye’s Espoir.

Rayon were missing five of their first team players including Thierry Manzi, Fabrice Mugeni, Kevin Muhire, Jimmy Ange Mutsinzi and Moussa Camara through injuries.

And, despite losing two points, head coach Djuma Masudi, said after the game that he was satisfied with the result given the pitch condition.

"We came here expecting a tough game and we needed three points or at least one point and I am very thankful that we managed to get a point, we could not play our game because the pitch was in a poor condition, we could not control the game as we wanted, but I am happy with the result,” said Masudi. 

Meanwhile, in the other topflight league games played on Saturday, Etincelles and Sunrise maintained their perfect start to the season as they registered their second win each on match day II.

Etincelles registered a 1-0 win over hosts Mukura Victory Sports courtesy of Ismael Gikamba’s strike at Huye Stadium, while Hoze Irabivuze scored Sunrise FC’s lone goal against hosts Kirehe FC in Ngoma to take control of the league race with six points each.

Police FC bagged their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Bugesera FC at Kicukiro stadium. Striker Danny Usengimana grabbed a brace for the cops while Farouk Ruhinda scored Bugesera’s consolation.
